Aberdeen is the silver-grey Granite City on the North Sea, the gateway to Royal Deeside and the start and finish of the NE250. It is about 150 miles up by the A90, a natural base at the top of an east-coast trip. Here is what to see and where to stay.

Things to do in Aberdeen
The Aberdeen Maritime Museum tells the story of the city and the sea, from herring to North Sea oil, and like the city's other museums it is free. Walk the long sandy Aberdeen Beach and its promenade, where dolphins are a regular sight offshore, and wander Old Aberdeen around the cobbles and King's College. Just south, the clifftop ruin of Dunnottar Castle at Stonehaven is one of the great photographs in Scotland, and the whole of Royal Deeside opens up to the west.
Where to stay near Aberdeen

Aberdeen and the north-east
Aberdeen is the natural anchor for the north-east. It sits at the top of the NE250, the quiet 250-mile loop through Royal Deeside, the Cairngorms edge, Speyside whisky country and the Moray dolphin coast, and the Cairngorms and Speyside campsites guide covers the inland half. From the Glasgow depot it is about three hours by Perth and the A90, a straightforward run up the east side.
