The dog comes too

Every Atlas motorhome and campervan is dog-friendly, with a small cleaning fee on pet bookings. No special vehicle to ask for, no separate booking process. Most of our customers travel with a dog; the fleet is set up for it.

What’s actually different about a dog-friendly Atlas vehicle?

Not much that the dog notices. The fleet is uniformly 4-berth, mostly automatic, and every vehicle takes pets. There’s no “pet-only” sub-fleet to ask for at booking; pets are accommodated for a small cleaning fee on top of the standard hire.

For the drive itself, the Highway Code wants the dog restrained so they can’t distract you or get hurt in a sudden stop. A seat-belt harness clipped to one of the rear belts is the simplest fix; carriers and travel cages also work. John (or whoever’s on the desk that day) can talk you through the options when you collect the vehicle.

Where to take them

The Atlas depot sits on the western edge of Glasgow city centre, fifteen minutes’ walk from Glasgow Central. Within two hours of leaving the depot you’re in dog country: long west-coast beaches with no off-lead restrictions, Highland glens with marked walking trails, pubs that put a water bowl out without you asking. Scotland’s Outdoor Access Code gives you wider freedom than England; lead on across livestock and you’re set. The trip ideas below are pulled from real customer routes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a charge for the dog?

Yes, a small cleaning fee. That covers the extra cleaning at the end of a pet hire. There’s no per-day pet rate and no surcharge for additional dogs in the same booking.

Do I need to ask for a "pet-friendly" vehicle when I book?

No. The whole fleet is dog-friendly. Pick the vehicle that fits your trip and the dog comes with it.

How do I keep the dog comfortable on long drives?

Feed the dog at least two hours before you set off; long stretches on Highland roads upset more stomachs than people expect. Stop every couple of hours for water, a short walk, and a chance to stretch their legs. If you need to leave the dog in the vehicle, keep the windows cracked and don’t do it on a sunny day with the cabin in the sun; even a Scottish summer can heat the inside fast.

Are any vehicles better than others for a larger dog?

The fixed-bed motorhomes give more clear floor space than the compact motorhome. Worth knowing if your dog is large or restless. We’ll match you to the right layout when you book.

Can the dog go in pubs and on beaches?

Most Highland pubs welcome well-behaved dogs inside. Most west-coast and north-coast beaches have no off-lead restrictions year-round, though a handful (Achmelvich is the well-known one) ban dogs from April to October. We’ve got guides on the blog: dog-friendly beaches and dog-friendly pubs.

What about ticks?

They’re real on Highland trails, especially spring and autumn. Spot-on treatment or a long-acting tablet covers most trips. We’ve got a longer practical guide on the blog: ticks and your dog in Scotland.
