Stirling sits where the Lowlands meet the Highlands, which made it worth fighting over for centuries and makes it a handy motorhome stop now: castle, Wallace Monument, the Ochils behind, and the road north in front. Barely 45 minutes from the depot, it is an easy first night or a base for a couple of days.

What to see in Stirling
Stirling Castle, high on its rock above the old town, is worth a half-day, and the National Wallace Monument on Abbey Craig is a climb up for the best view over the Forth valley. Bannockburn and its visitor centre sit on the edge of town, the heart of Braveheart country, and the Ochil Hills rise straight behind, with the short, sharp Dumyat walk for a big view.
Where to stay
- Witches Craig (Blairlogie). A four-star family park at the foot of the Ochils, AA Scottish Campsite of the Year, all-hardstanding hook-up and a dog wash, open April to October. Our Stirling motorhome weekend, a two-night Witches Craig itinerary, is built around it.
The road on
Stirling is a fine pivot: the Kelpies and the Falkirk Wheel are about 20 minutes south-east, Loch Lomond and the Trossachs are west, and it is the start of our Heart 200 route around Perthshire and the Trossachs.
